Wolves Blog: Top of the Premier League, for a bit – 22.08.11

I left Molineux on Saturday after witnessing a quite brilliant performance by the men in gold, knowing that for at least 30 minutes, we would be proudly sitting aloft the Premier League for the first time in our history.

The game also marked the start of my 20th season watching Wolves, having come to the game quite late on in life, being a full 18 years old before I first entered Molineux to watch my team lose 2-1 to the tractor boys of Ipswich.

Walking out of the transforming modern Molineux on Saturday I overheard a slightly beige looking group of chaps, desperately trying to muster some negativity from the brilliant victory over Fulham, “Yes I know we played well, but who was our worst player out there?”

I won’t bother to give you their pointless conclusions.

Those of us of a more positive disposition witnessed a really spirited display in the current three sided Mecca of Molineux. And right up there with the star performers on the day, was the man a lot of Wolves fans wanted replacing in the summer, Stephen Ward.

After his sumptuous winning volley against Blackburn last week, Wardy put in another strong performance to hopefully have even his strongest critics rethinking their assessment of him.

Over the summer we made O’Hara’s deal a permanent one and we also added Roger Johnson to give us some much needed clout at the back. Personally, I was never too fussed about bringing in a left-back and I think too many fan’s got far too hung-up on this one position in the team.

I would like to have seen a defensive minded midfielder come in over the last couple of months to challenge Karl Henry’s monopoly of that position.

Although quite capable, Karl is a player who often frustrates with his negative approach to the game and certainly doesn’t have the vision of Milijas or O’Hara. Having already lost his captaincy to Roger Johnson, it almost seemed a natural step that Mick McCarthy would bring in somebody to make Karl fight for his place.

With over a week still to go in the transfer window, this may still happen, but with Wolves currently sitting in an automatic Champions League spot, I doubt that we will see any major movement at the club.

If rumours are true, it may be that we will have to fight hard to hold on to Jarvis and Doyle from the clutches of some of the top clubs in the division.

Transfer speculation aside, this has been a brilliant start to the season. In the last nail biting campaign; it took us till mid-October to accumulate six points (thank you to Smurfle91 on Twitter for that bit of insight!).

And although some may argue that the fixture list has been kind to Wolves, it’s a fantastic positive platform for the rest of the season. With weaker teams coming up and the likes of Wigan and Blackburn looking a bit rubbish, I predict good things for my beloved Wolves this season.
