Wolves vs Man Utd 0-1 – Fan’s Analysis 08.03.10

Man Utd looked toothless without Rooney, just how Wolves would look without Doyle –  and on Saturday we just didn’t take advantage.

It comes as no surprise that we are the least accurate in front of goal in the entire Premiership, given our woeful 21 league goals this season and Vokes underlined that fact with an unforgiveable miss at the death.

4-5-1 is obviously working though and at times on Saturday we were easily the better team. I thought Henry did well just in front of the back four, Jones was tidy with his passing and Guedioura looked a good threat bombing forward from Midfield.

At the back, Ronald Zubar nullified Nani brilliantly on one side whereas the unfortunate Stephen Ward gave Valencia acres of room to run into on the other flank.

Stephen Ward is our obvious weak link at the moment and his lack of positional sense at left back is being exposed time and time again by the quality of wingers in the Premiership.

In front of the cameras, Doyle was excellent again, terrifying the Utd back four and winning countless headers against the newest England Captain.

Anybody who thinks though that we should switch to a more attacking 4-4-2 for next week’s crunch game against Burnley should think again.

We simply don’t have another striker at the club anywhere near good enough to partner Doyle.

However, I would plead with Mick to change things quicker if he wants to win a game in future.

Getting extra strikers on with five minutes to go was pointless. Tactically, Alex Ferguson realized with 30 minutes left what changes were needed to win the game.

Perhaps there lies the difference in being Mick McCarthy and a top manager.
