Pompey vs Wolves 3-1 – Fan’s Analysis 03.05.10

It was the kind of performance that was to be expected with survival secured for Wolves and Pompey wanting to finish their last home game on a high.

In a way this game epitomises our exploits over the season with many chances created but not put to bed.

David James was in imperious form between the sticks though to foil Jones, Craddock, Henry, Doyle and Zubar. And James watched on as Sylvan Ebanks Blake wasted two guilt edge chances.

Mujangi Bia put in a decent first half performance and was presumably removed at the break after he ran out of steam.

And David Jones put in some nice set pieces, but no one really excelled – something you would probably expect when you lose 3-1.

Wolves simply took their collective feet off the gas and were punished for some sloppy defending.

At the end of the day it’s not overly important and a win next week could still see Wolves grab that 14th spot in the league, which would be a huge achievement.

A special mention must be made to the cracking banter from the rival supporters; the Pompey faithful singing, “One nil to the Championship” and the barmy army of Wolves retorting with, “We’re gonna buy all your players”.

But the performance does perhaps underline the necessity for Mick and the board to bring in the four or five players of proven quality over the summer to avoid the scourge of the 2nd season syndrome.

We need somebody to come in to help Doyle put the chances away and our defensive frailties sometimes means an over reliance on Hahnemann to dig us out of trouble.

Lets enjoy the now and well done to Mick and the boys for delivering another season of Premiership football and bring on the Baggies!
