As I write this post, we are a day from England playing in their first World Cup semi-final in a generation.
And, as a result, it can be difficult to focus on anything football related that isn’t three lions.
But. I’ll at least try.
Since the conclusion of an incredible season of football, it can be understandingly difficult to temper the expectations of some Wolves fans.
I’ve spoken to a few who are frustrated that we haven’t seen any marque signings yet (their words not mine) and they feel an apprehension that we may struggle unless we a get a move on in the transfer window.
Erm. Boly? Jota? Patricio? Jiminez? Neves on a five year contract? Is that not exciting enough?
A few years ago when we were welcoming (ahem) the likes of Saville, Wallace and Lonergan, who would have predicted that we would be watching a Wolves player in goal for at a World Cup who wasn’t just from a Welsh Principality.
And whilst Steve Morgan would gladly swap an Afobe speedboat for a Grant Holt pedalo, Fosun have slightly loftier ambitions, with Nuno at the bow.
There is little doubt that the perception of what success next season looks like from both the fans and the board alike will no longer be finishing 17th in the Prem. That lack of ambition disappeared with the welcome break-up of the 3Ms (McCarthy, Moxey & Morgan).
And when you are being linked with likes of the versatile Oleksandr Zinchenko, it is difficult not to embroil yourself in the hyperbole surrounding the club.
Even as I type this I’m wondering if a midtable finish would be seen as a disappointing first season back in the greed league; a familiar piece of vernacular for those who listen to WM.
Young, hungry and exciting talent is what has got the Three lions to the precipice of a World Cup final. And with the same philosophy, who is to say that this current breed of Wolves players couldn’t achieve something just as remarkable?
11th August just can’t come soon enough and hopefully we will able to welcome a World Cup winning goalkeeper in the opposition goal!
